As this is the end of the growing season in New Hampshire, the over-ripe ones fall to the ground. I went out on the porch two days ago and saw two of the tomatoes on the ground, but later on, I noticed that they were gone. I thought that birds had picked them up and forgot about it. Then today, there were three more and I was sitting on the porch when the mystery was solved.
I saw this little guy/girl scurry over to the grounded tomatoes, and literally cut the thing in half with his/her teeth. The resulting two pieces were then transported to the porch where it was totally consumed. And, there were no apologies on the part of the chipmunk! As a forager, anything on the ground is considered fair game and will usually be stored for the winter. I suspect that somewhere in the home burrow, there is a space for fallen tomatoes. Of course, this is next to the peanuts that I leave out for them. Good health to you my friend...
